Indonesia

Indonesia is the largest and widest archipelago in the world, consisting of more than 17,000 islands that spread between Asia and Australia, and the Indian and the Pacific Oceans. Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan (Borneo), Sulawesi and Papua are its five major islands. The total coast line is about 81,000 km and total land area is about 2 million sq km. Extensive coastal plains and mountain areas of 1,000 meters above sea level are characteristics of Sumatra, Kalimantan and west Papua.
Based on the 1994 data, the majority of land use/ land cover is forest (70%). About 22% are for agriculture, including wooded land. Rice fields cover about 4.4% of the land.

Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world after China, India and the United States. More than 203 million people live in its islands; Its annual population growth rate is 1.35%. In general, the country is still dominantly rural. About 40% of the population lives in cities. Java particularly has very dense population and urbanization is expected to increase rapidly.

Indonesian main economic activity is agriculture. However, as the country develops, this activity is becoming less and less important, in particular in areas close to cities or towns where a wider range of jobs is available.

 

Philippines

The Philippines is an archipelagic country in south-east Asia between the Philippine Sea and the South China Sea. The country consists of 7,107 islands stretching more than 1,840 km. The main islands are: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The total land area is about 298,170 sq km. Land utilization is arable land about 19%, permanent crops (17%) and other uses that made up to 64%.

The population is about 87.8 million people (2005 est.) with the annual growth rate of 1.84%. Services are the sectors that absorb most of labor force (48%), whereas agricultures absorb about 36% of labor force.
