Adaptation to Climate Change in Africa: Synergies with biodiversity and forest

Forests play key roles in supporting national economic activities and providing livelihood portfolios for many in Africa.

They provide valuable ecosystem services like climate regulation, hazard protection, water conservation, and also affordable goods like fuelwood, foods and nutritional supplements, and medicinal products etc. most of which depend on biodiversity.

They are at the frontline in mitigating climate impacts on Africa by reducing exposures to scourging heat, dust storms and floods. Inarguably, forests should play major roles in national development strategies and be the entry point for climate change adaptation in Africa.

TroFCCA at Conference on Adaptation of Forests and Forest Management to Changing Climate, Umeå- Sweden, 25-28 August 2008

TroFCCA & CIFOR has organized a ½ to 1 day session on “Tropical Forest management and Climate Change Adaptation” in the context of the upcoming IUFRO-FAO-SLU Conference entitled Adaptation of Forests and Forest Management to Changing Climate with Emphasis on Forest Health: A Review of Science, Policies, and Practices. We will include papers that cover the biophysical/silvicultural, social, institutional, and economic basis of tropical forest management (natural and planted stands) in the context of global climate change. more

TroFCCA at Symposium on Sustainable Forest Management in Africa, Stellenbosch-South Africa , 3 - 7 November 2008

In a continuous process of mainstreaming climate change into forest management practices, TroFCCA has successfully included a session on “Forests and climate Change Response – Can we balance adaptation and mitigation in Climate Change Response Programmes?”. more

The importance of forests ecosystems as providers of goods and services for society has been widely discussed. An identified need to protect forests through either conservation or sustainable management derives from the fact that forest loss can lead to negative costs to society in terms of foregone goods and services. Climate change (including climate variability), together with major processes as high deforestation rates, can affect the provision of goods and services from forests and, hence, hinder sustainable development.

Tropical forest ecosystems, in particular those on which the livelihoods of people from several regions of the world depend, are among the most vulnerable ecosystems to climate change variability and long term changes in temperature and rainfall. TroFCCA is an effort to contribute to the limited understanding of climate change impacts over forests, as well as to the scarcity of robust methodologies to assess vulnerability and plan for adaptation for these systems in particular.

TroFCCA aims to address mainstreaming adaptation into development policy by undertaking relevant research on how impacts of climate change over forests are likely to undermine specific development policies.
