WORKSHOP 15 - 18 August 2005, Brisbane, Australia

The second PEN workshop will be held 15. - 18. August 2005, Brisbane, Australia, immediately after the World Congress of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) (http://www.iufro.org/).

The aim of the workshop is to bring together the second batch of potential PEN partners to present and discuss the core idea and modalities of PEN: the key research questions, fieldwork design and implementation, data analysis, and so on.

The preliminary workshop programme is:

  • Session 1: Introduction, overview, participant expectations

  • Session 2: State of the art and theoretical approaches to the forest-poverty link

  • Session 3: Participants’ projects

  • Session 4: Common questions and common approaches

  • Session 5: Introduction to the Poverty and Environment Network (PEN)

  • Session 6: Fieldwork: survey types, sampling, questionnaires, problems and pitfalls, case studies

  • Session 7: Approaches and methods of data analysis

  • Session 8: Proposal writing

  • Session 9: Summary and concluding session

PhD students and young researchers interested in participating should get in touch with Arild Angelsen, PEN coordinator at arild.angelsen@umb.no, and also provide the information asked for in the Partners’ section of this Web page. Financial support to cover the costs of travel and stay will be available for the selected participants. The application deadline is 1. June 2005.

The workshop will be jointly hosted by Charles Darwin University (Australia), CIFOR, Norwegian University of Life Sciences, and International Foundation of Science (IFS).
