Partnership between communities and acacia pulp plantation in South Sumatra

Introduction

In the case study site in South-Sumatra, the CIFOR/Cirad team and the University Gadjah Mada work together in an area where multi-stakeholders have different views and power as well as conflicting interests.

2005 was the first year of the LPF project implementation in South Sumatra and developed activities onwards.

The project is situated in the context of a partnership agreement between the Acacia mangium forest plantation company Musi Hutan Persada (MHP) and communities living in and surrounding the plantation. The partnership was developed to mitigate the conflicts over land uses between the company and local communities in the 1990s. However, the interests, knowledge and demands of the communities and the company are evolving, which undermine the partnership.
