Summary: Globally, there is increasing recognition of the important role of forest products in the lives of the rural poor and growing interest to use forest resources to support poverty alleviation. New and growing markets for forest products and services are creating new opportunities for employment and income generation from forest products at local, national and global levels. At the same time, there are concerns the promoting such measures may lead of loss of forests. Notwithstanding this debate, there is very less empirical data is available on the actual forest products, their use and economic contribution to the rural people as well as to the government. This is particularly true for north-eastern states of India, which have large area of land under forest. Data on these aspects are required for planning as well as for formulation of policies that are conducive for conservation and management of forest resources and help in enhancing benefits to the forest dependent communities and in amelioration of poverty. Emanating from these concerns, this book is an attempt to address the knowledge gap by providing information about key forest products used by people of the state of Meghalaya, which is known for its rich forests and has a large proportion of people who derive their subsistence and income needs from forest products. The book highlights eleven important forest products used by people in Meghalaya, their economic contribution and discusses the potential and constraints in promoting these forest products for livelihoods improvement of the people in the state.
