Books: Stakeholder Incentives in Participatory Forest Management

A Manual for Economic Analysis
Michael Richards, Gil Yaron, Jonathan Davies

This manual provides practical methodological guidance for the economic analysis of stakeholder incentives in participatory forest management (PFM). It stems from the concern that poor understanding has contributed to the often weak local participation in PFM, and therefore the limited success of many PFM experiences. The manual will help governments, NGOs and donors identify appropriate interventions to encourage participation. The first part involves an introduction to economic concepts applied to PFM. The second section contains a stakeholder analysis toolbox, with information and techniques on understanding the decision-making context, physical quantification of costs and benefits and participatory analysis and monitoring.

"What makes this manual more innovative is its approach to enabling small farmers and foresters to participate in using economic tools to analyze their situation and identify solutions to their problems" David Kaimowitiz, Director General, Center for International Forestry Research.

A Land on Fire
By James David Fahn

In "A Land on Fire", investigative journalist James Fahn argues that Southeast Asia's fight to protect its environment is inextricably intertwined with its difficult struggles for democracy and economic modernization.

James Fahn spent a decade grappling with the challenges facing the region's mega-cities, tropical forests, coastlines, and societies dashing toward modernity. "A Land on Fire" examines the profound implications for global issues such as climate change, the loss of biodiversity, and the greening of world trade and explores Southeast Asia's environmental battles through the eyes of the people fighting them.

"A fascinating eye-witness story of unbalanced development."
