Scientist, Forests and Climate Change
Based in Lima, Peru
The Center for International Forestry Research advances human wellbeing, environmental conservation, and equity by conducting research to inform policies and practices that affect forests in developing countries. With headquarters in Bogor, Indonesia and offices in Asia, Africa and South America, CIFOR works in more than 30 countries worldwide and has links with researchers in 50 international, regional and national organisations. CIFOR is a member of CGIAR, the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research.
CIFOR is looking for a scientist to join its Research Team as part of the Environmental Services and Sustainable Use of Forests Program. The scientist will work closely with colleagues in other programs, will help facilitate and identify strategic opportunities, and will be responsible for research and project management, in close consultation with the CIFOR Regional Coordinator for Latin America and under the overall guidance of the respective Programme Director.
The scientist is expected to contribute to forests and climate change research activities in Latin America, including:
- Undertake relevant research in the context of both mitigation and adaptation science as it relates to forest management and forest-based environmental services
- Coordinate activities of a CIFOR coordinated project funded by the Spanish Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Tecnología Agraria y Alimentaria on mitigation and adaptation of forests to climate change (Proyecto MIA: Mitigación y Adaptación al Cambio Climático)
- Coordinate the Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation focus of the CGIAR Amazon Ecoregional Program for the Amazon Initiative.
- Develop new research initiatives in climate change mitigation and adaptation and participate in fund raising.
Requirements
Education, Experience and Technical Competencies
- PhD in an appropriate discipline (for example, forest ecology, conservation biology, forest management, environmental sciences or natural resources economics).
- At least five years of research experience in Latin America.
- Significant experience in capacity building and training.
- A proven record of project management.
- Fluency in both English and Spanish is required, and proficiency in Portuguese is preferred.

Terms of Employment
- The position is regionally recruited and will be based in Lima, Peru.
