Deputy Director General

The Center for International Forestry Research advances human wellbeing, environmental conservation, and equity by conducting research to inform policies and practices that affect forests in developing countries. With headquarters in Bogor, Indonesia and offices in Asia, Africa and South America, CIFOR works in over 30 countries worldwide and has links with researchers in 50 international, regional and national organisations. CIFOR is a member of the CGIAR (Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research).

CIFOR is looking for a dynamic and visionary Deputy Director General.

The Deputy Director General is responsible for leading, planning, executing, managing, and monitoring CIFOR’s global research for development activities. This role requires coordination of activities across three research programs and six cross-cutting research domain teams, in addition to support from information, human resources, and finance and administration services units.

  • Work closely with the Director General in overseeing and guiding the operations of CIFOR including acting on behalf of the Director General during her absence.
  • Provide strategic leadership to the implementation and monitoring of CIFOR’s Board-approved strategy, ensuring the alignment of research, outreach, and capacity-building activities with the strategy.
  • Provide overall leadership to ensure the quality of the Center’s science, working with other Directors to establish and implement appropriate standards and procedures.
  • Ensure the impact orientation of CIFOR’s research, including supervision of the Center’s Impact Assessment unit, subjecting new research initiatives to ex ante impact assessment, and selected completed initiatives to ex post impact assessment, as appropriate.
  • Provide leadership and direction to CIFOR’s regionalisation, serving as direct supervisor to Regional Coordinators in Cameroon and Burkina Faso, and ensuring that the locations, partnerships, and headquarters support associated with other outposted staff are consistent with CIFOR’s strategy.
  • Serve as focal point for CIFOR’s engagement with key partners, including the Government of Indonesia, the CGIAR, and the World Agroforestry Centre.
  • Supervise the annual planning process to update CIFOR’s Medium Term Plan, and associated monitoring and reporting to the CGIAR system.
  • Represent and promote CIFOR’s interests in various national, regional, and international forums.
  • Contribute to resource mobilisation, including the cultivation of existing donors, and identification of new opportunities.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in forestry, natural resources, social sciences or other related discipline;
  • At least 10 years of international experience in a senior management position, preferably in an international organisation;
  • Significant professional experience in developing countries;
  • Experience in both research and development is an advantage;
  • Proven experience in donor relations, communications, resource mobilisation and project management;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively within and between institutions;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and fluency in spoken and written English;
  • Proficiency in other international language(s) is desirable.

Terms of Appointment:

The appointment will be for an initial period of three years, with the possibility of extension. Compensation will be commensurate with skills and experience. The salary is paid in US dollars. The position will be based in Bogor, Indonesia.
